Gua sha is the practice of using a stone, change (coins), wooden sticks and other tools, to scrape across the skin to release areas of tension. While this practice began over 2 million years ago, the Chinese coined the phrase and modernized the practice during the Ming Dynasty, between 1368 and 1644.
The term “Gua sha” is made up of two Chinese words meaning scrape (gua) and sand (sha). The term denotes the appearance of the tiny blood spots that can temporarily appear under the skin during a Gua sha massage application on the body. These temporary blood spots, or petechiae, look like pebbles of sand under the skin, and can be avoided by applying less pressure to the skin and by using our clear quartz stone. (Please NOTE, that we do not recommend for you to apply too much pressure on your face, to avoid any possible sand like redness that can cause temporary bruising)
According to traditional Chinese medicine, Gua sha creates friction to help clear “internal” heat and stagnation. As TCM believes that pain is created by the "internal" heat. When you create friction under your facial skin, you’re activating circulation.

I received this gua sha as part of a skincare set and I’m honestly surprised how often I reach for it. The edges feel smooth on my skin, and using it after applying oil just … feels like doing something good for myself. My jaw tension has eased, too.
I’ve used gua sha before and sometimes it’s harsh, but this one glides nicely and doesn’t tug. After a few minutes I feel a subtle lift in my cheekbones and a softness around my temples. It’s a little ritual I look forward to.
I use it in the morning when my face is puffy — massage with my serum for a few minutes, and puffiness around my eyes and cheeks seems reduced. More than that, the process is calming, like a mini facial at home.
